Getting Started at HostV

Welcome to your future website! First, let us thank you for giving us the opportunity to be your host. We treat this as an honor and a privilege and encourage you to contact us should you ever need any help. For starters, we’ve enclosed this little tutorial to help you start on your website!

Configuring Your Domain Nameservers

Before your domain(s) will begin working with your new HostV VPS or Dedicated server, you will need to configure them to point to your server. All you need is the 2 IPs assigned to your vps which you should of received in your welcome email. Make note of these IPs. This is a very simple process, and nearly all domain registrars will have a quick tutorial on how exactly to do this with their registration service, so check with their Knowledgebase or FAQ database, as well. We also have video tutorials on how to do this process at multiple common registrars. If all else fails you can contact your registrar support and request that they do it for you. They should have no problems doing so.

Click Here to watch our video tutorials for nameserver registration at your existing domain registrar, or if you have the domain registered through us, you may contact us to help get you setup.

  1. You will find two IP addresses in your Welcome E-Mail from HostV, these will looking something like this: 123.45.67.89, 123.45.67.90. Make note of these IP addresses, they will be used often when connecting to your server or in this case, configuring your nameservers.
  2. The first IP address will be your Primary Nameserver IP. This is the IP you will want to use when registering “ns1.yourdomain.com” at your domain registrar. The second IP address will be your Secondary Nameserver IP. This is the IP you will want to use when registering “ns2.yourdomain.com” at your domain registrar.
  3. Go to your domain registrar (if your registrar is HostV, then login to the billing system and go to the domain management interface) and login. Here you will need to first register your primary and secondary nameservers. This typically can be done in the DNS management section or the Nameserver section of your domain management control panel. If you cannot find this area at your domain registrar, please E-Mail their associated support team for instructions on how to register a nameserver with their service.
  4. Once you have found the nameserver registration area or method, then you may continue and register your nameservers as follows (for this example):
    ns1.yourdomain.com to IP 123.45.67.89
    ns2.yourdomain.com to IP 123.45.67.90
  5. Now that domain nameserver registration is complete, they can be used for any domain that you want to host on your vps, including your main domain. Be sure to go to your main nameserver section of your account with your registrar and change your nameservers to your newly created ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com

Now, your domain is set to point to your new HostV server! Note, it will take up to 24 hours for these changes to become apparent on the Internet, so you may notice it doesn’t work immediately, usually waiting a few hours will do the trick.

Control Panel

We’ve included with your account, the industry standard in control panels, CPanel. It is our opinion that this control panel is the best in the industry when it comes user-friendliness and functionality. Here’s some quick instructions on the control panel, and how to use it. Cpanel is the end user control panel. The admin panel that manages your VPS is WebHostManager which is also referred to as WHM. WHM is used to manage all aspects of your vps, including the setup of accounts. Note, anywhere it says ‘123.45.67.89’, Input the primary IP address from your HostV welcome letter. Before you get started, though, there are a number of steps to get your HostV server ready to accept cPanel accounts and new domains. Let’s get started finalizing your server setup!

Please be sure to check out our WHM video tutorials by Clicking Here.

  1. Login to WHM with the details provided in your HostV Welcome E-Mail. This will involve going to an address such as http://123.45.67.89:2086/ and using the username “root” and associated password. *NOTE:* The "root" user that is used for logging in to SSH and WHM, may not be used to login to FTP, you must use your newly created account username and password for FTP access.
  2. When you first login to WHM using the login details provided from your Welcome E-Mail, you will be sent through a series of steps to setup/initialize your vps. The first step will ask you to accept the license agreement with cPanel, click the I Agree/Go To Step 2 button near the bottom of the page. The next page will be where we enter our contact information. Most of the information on this page will be left blank, but the necessary fields are as follows:

    Server Contact E-Mail Address: admin@mydomain.com
    Hostname: server1.mydomain.com
    Primary Nameserver: ns1.mydomain.com
    Secondary Nameserver: ns2.mydomain.com

Be sure to use the nameservers you setup in step one at your registrar for the nameserver entries. Replacing ns1.hostv.com and ns2.hostv.com as neither of these nameservers will work for your vps.

As you continue on to the next steps, most of the entries will be predefined already. Clicking through to continue will be fine. Once completed you will be at the main WHM screen where you can manage your vps and start setting up accounts.
  3. Once this has been completed, you can use the "Add Package" link to add a new hosting package for your primary account. Set it up with your desired settings & allotments.
  4. Once you've created a new hosting package for your account, you can use the "Create an Account" link to setup your primary hosting account. Once your account is setup, you may then login to FTP using your new account username and password and the primary IP address of your hosting server.
